Heavy Rain Director's Cut

Well, I thought I was going to get away with not making a post today until I read about this little gem.  Heavy Rain, the mogamevie that completely misses the point of video games, is getting a Director's Cut re-release.  Industry, we need to have a heart to heart.  Meet me at camera three.

DO NOT DO THIS THING.  I'll say that again but slower to make sure you understand - DO NOT.  MAKE.  THIS GAME.  You are not Hollywood.  Stop aspiring to become Hollywood.  Stop acting like you already are Hollywood.  A director's cut of a video game?  A director's cut of a video game?  I don't even know how to react to this other than incandescent rage.

Let's talk about this a little.  I'm sure some of you don't understand why I would react this way.  The whole "Director's Cut" thing is a terrible practice being used by Hollywood to excuse themselves to charge you an extra five bucks, or in even worse situations that I've seen cropping up from time to time, get you to buy a movie more than once.  They put out a theatrical release and a special edition/director's cut at the same time, with just the movie on the $20 theatrical release version, and all the special features, maybe a couple minutes of footage re-edited back into a movie, and any excluded naughty bits restored on the $25 director's cut version.  Sometimes I've seen them even put out the normal version first, then release the director's cut version a few months later, and let you pay them twice for the same movie.

"But why so angry, Reactionist?" you may ask.  Well, when DVDs first started hitting the market, the whole point was that you could fit all those HBO specials and what not on them, along with a menu to select what to play.  That was why we were told to ditch VHS.  Now we are getting the old VHS version released right along side the DVD version, but both are on DVDs and at DVD prices.  Hollywood is bilking their consumers, and they are starting to catch on - notice how long Blu-Ray is taking to crowd out DVDs?  That's not a coincidence.  Now, Sony is trying to take us down the same road with their video games, and I won't stand for it.  If you own a PS3, do not buy this rehash!  Do not let Sony think they can get away with this!  Speak with your wallets and stop "Director's Cuts" before they become common practice!

The moment pride is lost, freedom is also lost.
